HISTORY OF IABCC

The 1st Inter-American Breast Cancer Conference was held in 2002 in Cancun, Mexico. The conference has turned into a world meeting focusing on what to do with your patient at the bedside on Monday morning. One of the objectives of the meeting is to create a scientific and educational bridge across the Atlantic Ocean to unite North, Central and South American and European physicians and scientists in their strive to deliver optimal care for breast cancer patients. To support this, Dr. Silva established – as part of the first conference – the Umberto Veronesi Award for Excellence in Breast Cancer Research and Development, one of the most prestigious awards given in Breast Cancer.

Orlando E. Silva is a medical oncologist specializing in breast cancer. He is an Associate Professor at the Miller School of Medicine, University of Miami, and serves as the Director of Breast Cancer Education at the University of Miami /Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Dr. Silva is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, a Diplomat of the American Boards of Internal Medicine, Hematology, Oncology and Forensic Medicine. He is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology and other national and international medical societies.

In addition to his love of learning, Dr. Silva founded the Emmaus Medical Mission in 2003 which completes at least four medical missions a year. The missions are dedicated to treating the medical needs of the underserved, impoverished, and forgotten people of Central and South America, and are being expanded to Arab and Asian counties. He is fluent in English, Spanish & Italian and wants to welcome all nationalities to the upcoming 6th Inter-American Breast Cancer Conference.
